Dr. José Manuel González-Páramo was appointed Executive Board Director of BBVA in 2013. BBVA is Europe’s sixth largest bank by market capitalization. As Executive Board Director, he is the Chief Officer, Global Economics, Regulation & Public Affairs, and the Chairman of its International Advisory Board. He also is the Chairman of European DataWarehouse GmbH, the first European central data facility to provide world-class transparency standards for asset-backed securities (ABS) transactions.  Notably, Dr. González-Páramo served as a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB) from 2004 to 2012, and as a member of the ECB’s Governing Council.

At the ECB, Dr. González-Páramo was responsible for market operations and monetary policy implementation. He was in charge of designing and implementing the Bank’s innovative post-crisis unconventional monetary policy measures.  During his tenure at the ECB, he held a variety of other responsibilities, including economic research, risk management, statistics, information systems and banknotes.He also served as a member of the pivotal Committee on the Global Financial System (CGFS) of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS).

Dr. González-Páramo’s professional record is a blend of central bank decision-making and private sector responsibilities, academic experience and advisory positions. In 1988 he was appointed Professor of Economics at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), where as a student he had earned a Ph.D. in Economics. In addition, he has taught advanced courses in economic analysis of public policies at the Monetary and Financial Studies Center of Madrid (CEMFI) and at other research centers. Since September 2012, he has served as a Professor at the IESE Business School of the University of Navarra, ranked by The Economist in 2016 as Europe’s top business faculty.

Dr. González-Páramo has written and spoken extensively on financial matters, monetary policy and the global economy. From 1985 to 1994 Dr. Gonza2lez-Páramo was an economic adviser to various public and private institutions, including the Bank of Spain (1989-1994), the European Commission, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group. He has participated in working groups on economic and financial matters at the BIS and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Before his appointment to the ECB, he was a member of the Governing Council of Bank of Spain (1994-2004) and of its Executive Committee (1998-2004).

Since December 2016, Dr. González-Páramo has been the European Chair of the TransAtlantic Business Council (TABC), the official business advisory group on international trade, investment, and regulatory issues to the European Commission and the U.S. Government. Previously, he was the European chair of the TransAtlantic Business Dialogue (TABD),  that merged with the TABC in December 2016.

A Fulbright scholar and holder of a Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University, Dr. González-Páramo serves as Vice-chairman of the Fundación Consejo España – EE.UU. He is a member of the European Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has received several awards, including the Charles the Fifth Medal of the German-Spanish Chamber of Commerce (“contribution to a more united Europe”), Premio Institut D’Estudis Financers a la Excelencia Financiera (“professional career”), Premio Círculo de Empresarios and Doctor Honoris Causa (Universidad de Málaga), among others.

In May 2015 he was elected Full Member of the Real Academia de Ciencias Morales y Políticas by the plenary of this institution, created in 1857.
