Eugeniusz Smolar is a leading Polish analyst of foreign affairs, serving as President of the Center for International Relations from 2005-2009, Program Director and Deputy Chairman of Polish public radio, Director of the Polish Section of the BBC World Service. He was imprisoned in communist Poland for his activities assisting the Workers Defence Committee KOR, the “Solidarność” Trade Union in Poland, and was engaged in democracy movements in then-communist Czechoslovakia (Charter 77) and Hungary, and Helsinki groups in the Soviet Union. Today he is focused on issues related to the European security and foreign policy and on problems of human rights and democracy promotion.
